Chris Philp MP has called on the Labour government to arrange a debate on illegal immigration and asylum accommodation.
Mr Philp posted to X:
Urging the Govt to reinstate the Rwanda plan - the deterrent effect of which would have taken effect by now and stopped the boats as it did around 10 years ago in Australia - rather than Labour's new plan to rent expensive hotels.
Mr Philp also included a video of his statement made in the House of Commons.
Mr Philp said:
Mister speaker, finally, will the leader arrange a debate on illegal immigration and asylum accommodation? It emerged this week that the government is seeking even more hotels at huge expense to cater for the large number of illegal arrivals. Over 13,000 illegal immigrants have crossed by small boat since the election. The government must now regret cancelling the Rwanda scheme before before it had even started, before it had even started. The deterrent effect would, by now, have kicked in.
We saw that approach work in Australia. We saw the deterrent effect work with returns to Albania. Even the European Commission is now looking at a Rwanda style scheme. So will the right honourable lady consider reinstating that scheme, given the European Commission themselves are now looking at it? And why have they closed down the Bibby Stockholm and instead frantically renting expensive hotels?
The government is failing on illegal immigration. The country and the House need answers.
