Esther McVey on Labour's decision not to conduct an impact assessment on removing the Winter Fuel Allowance for 10 million pensioners

September 13th, 2024

Esther McVey continues to hold the Labour Party to account over their decision to cut the Winter Fuel Allowance for 10 million pensioners.

It appears that the Labour Party have not conducted any impact assessment on removing the Winter Fuel Payment from pensioners.

Esther McVey posted to X: "No wonder I didn’t get an answer when I asked the Minister had Labour done an impact assessment on removing the Winter Fuel Payment from 10m pensioners.

"We find out tonight - It’s because they hadn’t done one.

"What a disgrace."

Esther McVey's previous speech holding Labour to account in the House of Commons:

Out of touch so early on in their government, the unnecessary haste this change is being brought in, the lack of scrutiny of this policy, or the breathtaking hypocrisy Labour is showing. But back in 2017, when the Conservative manifesto stated that it would means test benefits, the Labour Party's reaction was one of horror, that this could not be done. Publishing research that up to 4,000 pensioners' lives would be at risk, and their pensioners would struggle to heat their homes. And so the conservatives did not do it.

So what are we seeing here? That a Labour Party, when in office ditches its beliefs and ditches its research.
