Norfolk County Council leader Kay Mason Billig is under pressure to resign after she posted a photograph of her having a tomahawk steak and a bottle of Italian red wine to Facebook whilst asking "Wonder what all the poor people are doing?"
This post, reported on June 20th, sparked significant backlash, with calls for her resignation from opposition leaders and some within her own party. Kay Mason Billig defended it as a "private joke" about her and her husband’s modest lifestyle, but the post was criticised as insensitive, especially given Norfolk’s reliance on food banks and her council’s £11.8m fund to support those struggling with food costs.
Kay Mason Billig appears to have deleted all of her posts, friends and photos on Facebook.
According to the Daily Mirror, Mrs Mason Billig, who is entitled to more than £51,000 in allowances from County Hall each year, told the EDP website the sharing of the post beyond her friends was a "personal attack" and a private joke had been misunderstood.
