There are allegations of a cover-up in Portsmouth regarding a rape charge against an asylum seeker staying in a taxpayer-funded hotel. Reports indicate that a man, identified in some X posts as Mubarak Ibrahim, was charged with rape and voyeurism following an alleged attack on a woman on June 11, 2025, at the Royal Beach Hotel in Southsea, which houses asylum seekers. He appeared at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court on June 16, 2025, and was remanded in custody.
Portsmouth City Council has been accused of withholding information about the suspect’s status as an asylum seeker to avoid inflaming "community tensions." Council members were reportedly briefed privately, and some, including Portsmouth Independents Party leader Cllr George Madgwick, were urged not to disclose details. Madgwick claimed he received late-night messages from senior police officers instructing him to "keep his mouth shut."
