DPP Stephen Parkinson: 'we have dedicated police officers scouring social media'

August 7th, 2024

Director of Public Prosecutions Stephen Parkinson appeared on Sky News today to warn that users retweeting videos of people rioting could be committing the offence of incitement to racial hatred! He warned that dedicated police officers are scouring social media.

DPP Parkinson said:

The offence of incitement to racial hatred involves, publishing or distributing material, which is, insulting, or abusive, which is intended to or likely to start racial hatred. So if you retweet that, then you'll republishing that and then potentially you're committing that offence. And we do have dedicated police officers who are scouring social media. Their job is to look for this material, and then follow-up with identification arrests and so forth. So it's really really serious.

People might think they're not doing anything, harmful. They are, and the consequences will be visited upon them.

Broadcaster Darren Grimes took a stand and posted to X:

"Excuse me, @S_ParkinsonKN of @CPSUK.

"It is vital events in Britain are made public, the public have an absolute right to be able to see them and debate them in what is the de facto public square.

"I have shared video, I very much look forward to your visit."
