Ian Byrne MP writes to Rachel Reeves with pensioner's messages after learning their Winter Fuel Payment is going to be scrapped

September 9th, 2024

Ian Byrne MP has written to Chancellor Rachel Reeves to alert her to the hundreds of emails he is receiving about Labour's plans to scrap the Winter Fuel Payment for millions of pensioners.

Ian Byrne said: "Winter Fuel Payment changes will harm so many pensioners just above the pension credit threshold, forcing them to heat or eat this winter. After being inundated by messages from scared constituents, I have written to the Chancellor, including samples of 100s of emails received."

In his letter to Rachel Reeves Mr Byrne said:

Chancellor, almost one million pensioners in the UK live in deprivation already. Taking away a vital payment will push more pensioners into the poverty trap. Hundreds of my constituents have contacted me to express how worried they are about what this change in policy will mean for their own circumstance. Many also feel very angry at a new Government in whom they placed a great deal of hope and trust and by whom they now feel deeply betrayed.

I have told my constituents I will be forwarding their concerns on to you Chancellor, after being inundated by messages from constituents terrified at losing their Winter Fuel Allowance.
