Parliament to be recalled on Saturday over British Steel concerns

April 11th, 2025

The Speaker of the House of Commons has granted a request from the Government to recall the House of Commons at 11am on Saturday 12 April. MPs were not due back to Westminster until 22nd April.

Reports are circulating that the government are considering taking control of British Steel after its Chinese owner, Jingye, said its blast furnaces are "no longer financially sustainable".

British Steel makes the vast majority of UK rail track and employs around 2,700 staff.

The steel industry is also due to be hit by a 25% tariff on steel exports to the USA.
