Police reportedly issue an order under Section 42A of the Criminal Justice and Police Act 2001, requiring everyone to leave the vicinity of the Britannia Hotel and not to return for 28 days

Update 4th August 2025

The Metropolitan Police have issued a statement to say that they have not banned protests outside the Britannia International Hotel. They posted to X:

We have not banned protests outside the Britannia International Hotel.

We continue to encourage those exercising their lawful right to protest to do so responsibly.

Anyone who crosses the line from lawful protest into criminality can expect to face police action.

The post also included the following statement:

Officers policed a protest for a considerable time today but a group remained who were harassing occupants of the hotel and staff, trying to prevent people accessing the hotel to make deliveries and making concerted efforts to breach the fencing and access the hotel.

Their actions went well beyond protest to harassment and we used powers under the Criminal Justice and Police Act 2001 to order that specific group to leave and not return for 28 days.

If a different group wishes to protest in the vicinity of the hotel they are not banned from doing so, providing they do so lawfully.

Police have introduced a section 42 order for the Britannia International Hotel, meaning that anyone protesting outside the luxury Canary Wharf hotel over the next 28 days will be arrested.

Police issued an order under Section 42A of the Criminal Justice and Police Act 2001, requiring everyone to leave the vicinity of the Britannia Hotel and not to return for 28 days, for causing “harassment, alarm and distress” to hotel residents at their permanent address.

Reform UK MP Lee Anderson has taken to X and posted:

What about the distress, alarm and sexual attacks on young British women and girls.

Absolutely gutless from our police bosses.

Note to police bosses - you are a disgrace and not fit to be in a job.

You have picked a side - the wrong side.

Simon Danczuk has also posted to X:

This is totally disgraceful, a police state. Starmer’s authoritarianism against the British people, in favour of illegal immigrants, many of whom turn out to be criminals and sex offenders. We can’t put up with this much longer…
