Angela Rayner suspended by Unite the Union

July 11th, 2025

Angela Rayner, the Deputy Prime Minister, has been suspended from Unite the Union due to her role in the Birmingham bin strike dispute.

The union, a major Labour Party backer, voted at its Brighton policy conference to suspend Angela Rayner, Birmingham council leader John Cotton, and other councillors, accusing them of supporting a Labour-run council that "peddled lies" and used "fire and rehire" tactics against striking bin workers.

The workers, facing pay cuts of up to £8,000, have been striking since January 2025, with an indefinite walkout since March. Unite claims Rayner failed to intervene to resolve the dispute, instead backing the council, which they say contradicts Labour’s Employment Relations Act promises.
