Secretary of State for Education, Bridget Phillipson, has angered many MPs with a post which is being described as 'preposterous' and 'class driven lunacy'.
Bridget Phillipson posted to X:
Our state schools need teachers more than private schools need embossed stationery.
Our children need mental health support more than private schools need new pools.
Our students need careers advice more than private schools need AstroTurf pitches.
Rupert Lowe MP said: "This is disgraceful class driven lunacy from a Labour Party that is plastered in sleaze."
Bradley Thomas MP said: "Labour’s education tax is morally wrong, divisive, and is the politics of envy.
"Jobs, education standards and financial stability for many families are all at risk.
"I’ll be raising these issues on Tuesday in Parliament when the impact of this tax is debated in Westminster Hall."
Annabel Denham from The Telegraph said: "The socialist mindset in one tweet. Demonise aspiration. Punish the successful. Justify it on the grounds it would be better for us all to be poorer, if it meant we were more equal."
Lord Moylan said: "This is a preposterous Tweet given that VAT on school fees will raise no revenue net."
Alicia Kearns MP said: "Bridget Phillipson is grossly dishonest if she won’t admit 70+% of private schools’ budgets are their staff.
"The impact of her policy of envy is unemployment, and a gut punch to rural economies.
"Families left without incomes as even the article states."
