Did Sir Keir Starmer really say he's not going to work after 6pm?

July 2nd, 2024

There has been lots of speculation around whether Keir Starmer is going to work past 6pm in the evening.

What did Keir Starmer actually say about working after 6pm?

Keir Starmer's full quote about working hours (via @PippaCrerar):

"We’ve had a strategy in place and we’ll try to keep to it, which is to carve out really protected time for the kids, so on a Friday - I’ve been doing this for years - I will not do a work-related thing after six o’clock, pretty well come what may. There are a few exceptions, but that’s what we do."

Isabel Oakeshott thinks Keir Starmer has made a "massive blunder".

Starmer is auditioning for the most important job in this country. Now is NOT the moment to talk about how much time he wants to take off. Massive, massive blunder.

Isabel Oakeshott said that she is not sure if Keir Starmer is going to last long:

Being PM requires almost super human energy and commitment. It isn't for everyone and it isn't for ever. Only the exceptional need apply. I'm not sure @Keir_Starmer is going to last long.

The Conservative Post posted a comment re-igniting the Durham Beergate incident, where Keir Starmer insisted that he and Labour Party colleagues were working after 6pm whilst drinking beer!

So Keir Starmer said he “will NOT do a work thing on a Friday after 6pm”. Erm… he got off being fined in Durham because he said #Beergate was a work thing on a Friday (30 April 21) after 6pm. Cheating and lying to the British people #KeirStarmer?

Harry Cole, Political Editor at The Sun, quoted a Conserative source:

"Whether he likes it or not, if he became PM, Sir Sleepy would be required to work after 6pm. If he thinks he can just put his slippers on and make a mug of Horlicks while he tunes into The One Show, then he is in for a shock."
