Angela Rayner, the UK Deputy Prime Minister, faced significant backlash on X for using the hashtag #DyingToWork in a post announcing government support for a charter to protect terminally ill workers from job insecurity.
X users, slammed the hashtag as "tone-deaf" and "abhorrent," arguing it insensitively suggested terminally ill people are eager to work despite their condition.
The timing hasn't helped as the Labour government are proposing £5 billion of cuts to disability and sickness benefits.
Angela Rayner posted:
No one battling terminal illness should have to face extra stress and worry over their job security.
It's vital that employees with a terminal diagnosis are treated sensitively and with the best support – that’s why I’m so proud we are backing this charter.
