James Cleverly - 'The Labour government has been played by its union paymasters'

August 16th, 2024

Just yesterday (15th August) the Secretary of State for Transport, Louise Haigh, boasted on X:

I promised to move fast and fix things, and that’s exactly what we’re doing.

That’s why we’ve agreed a deal with @ASLEFunion which – if members agree – will put an end to the rail strikes after two long years.

Just twenty four hours later, after securing a 14 per cent pay rise from the Labour Government, members of the train drivers’ union ASLEF have announced a new campaign of strikes on LNER.

Strikes are set to take place over weekends starting from 31st August. Strikes will last until 10th November.

James Cleverly took to X and posted: "The Labour government has been played by its union paymasters.

"This latest wave of strikes will be devastating for families who rely on train travel to see their loved ones."

Mr Cleverly continued: "Offering a no-strings pay deal to militant strikers whilst stripping millions of pensions of their winter fuel payment is nothing short of a national embarrassment."

LNER runs trains between London and Edinburgh on the East Coast Main Line, serving cities including Sunderland, Newcastle and York.
