Keir Starmer has confirmed that the Labour Party aim to repeal a law which protects veterans from prosecution.
A caller asked: "So how can that be equal if you're just going to repeal an act that just means you're going to prosecute veterans, but you're not going to chase terrorists? ".
Keir Starmer replied:
Well, Steve, thank you for your question. And you may or may not know that I worked in Northern Ireland for 5 years with the police service of Northern Ireland. So, I've got quite a lot of knowledge and experience about the process in Northern Ireland and obviously the history of the conflict and the aftermath to it. In relation to this legislation, I'm against it for a number of reasons.
The first is it doesn't have the support of any of the political parties in Northern Ireland. And knowing Northern Ireland in the way that I do, for a Westminster government to push through legislation which doesn't have the political support in Northern Ireland is the wrong way of doing business. The second thing, Steve, is this, that it doesn't have the support of the victims groups in Northern Ireland and including victims of terrorists, including the IRA. The letters of comfort, were given to some but not all. And there are terrorists, who, could be prosecuted.
