Labour MP for Nottingham East Nadia Whittome MP - "New eligibility rules will shut off vital support from up to 1.2 million disabled people"

March 20th, 2025

Labour MP for Nottingham East, Nadia Whittome MP, is urging Labour to drop their proposed PIP assessment changes.

Ms Whittome has said:

The PIP assessment is already gruelling and it often isn’t awarded to those who need it.

Now, new eligibility rules will shut off vital support from up to 1.2 million disabled people.

I’m urging the government to drop this policy.

Ms Whittome told Politics Live:

You know how difficult it is to claim PIP? Not everybody who is disabled is eligible for PIP automatically. You have to go through an assessment.

It's it's a very gruelling process. I don't know whether it's something that any of you have ever gone through, but I have, and it was horrible. What we need is to be supporting people who are the most vulnerable.. And this does not do that because the PIP eligibility change means that people have to score four in one category under the daily activities assessment.

If you score a lower level across every category, then you still wouldn't be eligible for it. And I'll give you an example. If you need assistance to wash your hair or your body below the waist or supervision to go to the toilet, do you know what score that gives you? It's two.
