The Government had previously rejected a national inquiry into rape gangs and promised five local ones instead.
Jess Phillips announced in the House of Commons that the five local inquiries were to become "locally led work". Ms Phillips made this announcement on the last day of sitting before the Easter break.
Katie Lam appeared on Talk TV today and said:
So it was supposed to be a local inquiry, and now it will be a local inquiry or other locally led work. It's just not good enough. It's not possible anyway for proper local inquiries to look at national themes, but we know that there are gangs of men, predominantly Asian Muslim, either from Pakistan or of Pakistani heritage, who have sexually tortured over many years, thousands of young white girls girls in this country. And without looking at everything that's happened all across Britain, how can we understand why this happened, whether it's still happening, which if anything, I think is the most terrifying of all, and how to make sure it doesn't happen again.
