With just days to go before Foreign Secretary David Lammy left for China, Angela Rayner has taken control of the stalled planning decision for a new Chinese embassy in central London.
Tower Hamlets council have previously rejected planning permission.
The Chinese government purchased Royal Mint Court six years ago.
Lucy Fisher's piece in the Financial Times has all of the finer details.
Tory leader hopeful Robert Jenrick reacted to Ms Fisher's post on X:
Why has this decision been called in just as Lammy arrives in China, when Tower Hamlets council were set to reject it?
The threat from Chinese espionage has never been greater.
We must wake up to the threat from China and scrap this proposal immediately.
