Metropolitan Police arrest Labour Party member involved in 'honeytrap' scandal

June 26th, 2024

Reports [1][2] are circulating that the Metropolitan Police have arrested a Labour Party member in connection with the Westminster 'honeypot' scandal. The member has been arrested  on suspicion of harassment and committing offences under the Online Safety Act.

Police launched an investigation in April 2024 after William Wragg, the MP for Hazel Grove in Greater Manchester, said he was "manipulated" into giving the personal details of colleagues to a man he met on a dating app.

Mr Wragg was reported as saying: "They had compromising things on me. They wouldn't leave me alone... I gave them some numbers, not all of them."

It is believed that as many as 20 people who move in political circles are reported to have received unsolicited messages, which have included explicit photos.

Targets were contacted by scammers using aliases such as "Charlie" and "Abi" while sending flirtatious messages in an attempt to coax MPs and other figures in political circles into sending explicit pictures.

The Hazel Grove MP resigned the whip and sits as an independent in the House of Commons.
