Pippa Crerar - "Downing Street is reviewing winter fuel payment as policy could wreak serious electoral damage"

May 6th, 2025

Pippa Crerar, Political Editor at The Guardian, has posted an exclusive to X announcing that the government may make changes to their previous winter fuel payment cuts.

Ms Crerar posted:

EXCL: Downing Street is reviewing its controversial winter fuel payment cut amid growing anxiety at top of government that policy could wreak serious electoral damage.

Keir Starmer’s senior team has been discussing for several weeks how to handle public anger over policy, which bubbled over at local elections.

While full reversal is not expected, No 10 sources say they’re considering whether to increase £11,500 threshold over which pensioners are no longer eligible for allowance.

These discussions do *not* constitute a formal review of winter fuel allowance policy and, as we report, if No 10 does decide to tweak the threshold it wouldn't be happening any time soon. Full story.
