Rachel Reeves: £4,800 more on your mortgage - That is the cost of the Conservatives' plan

June 13th, 2024

Rachel Reeves, Shadow Chancellor, has reacted to the Tory manifesto launch. Ms Reeves said: "The money is not there, and it will mean £4,800 on your mortgage".

Today the Conservatives have published their manifesto. I've just responded directly to their plans. What we saw this morning was a desperate wish list of unfunded promises from a weak prime minister. Because of the 7 separate pledges, in every case, it's not clear where the money is gonna come from. Analysis that we have conducted since publication has identified 71,000,000,000 pounds of unfunded commitments over the course of the next parliament.

The money is not there, and it will mean £4,800 on your mortgage. It's important that we are really clear about the risks that the Conservative manifesto represents. This is serious, just like the Prime Minister's predecessor, Rishi Sunak's plans pose a genuine threat to our economy and to your family finances.
