Reports are suggesting that Collyer Bristow LLP has served proceedings against Chancellor Rachel Reeves on behalf of a group of farmers and business owners regarding the "Family Farms Tax."
The legal challenge, initiated on June 23, 2025, seeks a judicial review, arguing that the government failed to conduct a proper consultation on the inheritance tax changes affecting agricultural property relief (APR) and business property relief (BPR).
These reforms, announced in the October 2024 Budget, cap the tax-free exemption for farms and family businesses at £1 million from April 2026. The claimants assert that the limited, technical consultation between February and April 2025 was insufficient, breaching public law obligations.
