Reports suggest that Angela Rayner plans to increase Council Tax bills in the south to fund investment in the north

Angela Rayner, the UK’s Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, has been linked to a controversial plan to reform local authority funding, which some reports claim could result in higher council tax bills in southern England to support increased funding for northern regions.

Reports suggest Angela Rayner is planning a “progressive” redistribution of local authority funding, aiming to allocate resources based on local needs. This would reportedly shift funding from wealthier councils, primarily in London and the South East, to more deprived areas, particularly in the north. The goal is to address disparities where poorer areas face higher council tax rates for worse services.
