Sadiq Khan - Fantastic scenes at Notting Hill Carnival - MET Police - Carnival marred by unacceptable violence

August 26th, 2024

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan took to X to tell us about the "fantastic scenes" at the Notting Hill Carnival.

Sadiq Khan posted: "Fantastic scenes at Notting Hill Carnival today celebrating London’s Caribbean communities.

"Carnival is part of the very fabric of our city and an amazing way to bring communities together."

It would appear that the Metropolitan Police are not of the same page as the Mayor of London.

The MET posted a list of offences:

We're aware of three stabbings. A 32-year-old woman is in hospital in a life threatening condition, a 29-year-old man is in hospital with non-life threatening injuries and we await an update on the condition of a 24-year-old man.

15 officers have been assaulted. Fortunately none have sustained serious injuries.

90 arrests have been made so far, for the following offences:

10 x assaults on an emergency worker

8 x possession with intent to supply drugs

18 x possession of an offensive weapon

6 x assault

4 x sexual offences

4 x robbery

8 x possession of class A drugs

13 x possession of class B drugs

4 x possession of nitrous oxide

5 x possession drugs (other)

1 x theft from a person

1 x public order offence

8 x other offences

The MET posted the following statement to X on Sunday night:

Yesterday we saw the first day of Carnival marred by unacceptable violence. Three people were stabbed and we only very narrowly avoided a fatality.

This was supposed to be 'family day' - a celebration suitable for all ages. One of those in hospital, a 32-year-old woman whose condition remains critical, was at Carnival with her young child.

We are tired of saying the same words every year. We are tired of telling families that their loved ones are seriously injured, or worse. We are tired of seeing crime scenes at Carnival.

Carnival is a community event and the vast majority of people come to celebrate, to dance, to enjoy music and have a fantastic experience.

It is the responsibility of all who value this event, who want to see it as the celebration it should be, to speak out and speak up about the violence that continues to overshadow it.

Whether it is information about a previous incident now under investigation, or information about someone coming to Carnival today to commit crime, please tell us.

If you know anything that could help us, please call the police directly or contact Crimestoppers, anonymously. It is no exaggeration to say that you could save a life by doing so.

Anyone with information is urged to call police on 101, to message @MetCCon X or to call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
