Andy McNab is a British author and former soldier who served with the Special Air Service (SAS) and became widely known through his account of the Bravo Two Zero patrol during the 1991 Gulf War.
McNab joined the British Army as a teenager and served with the Royal Green Jackets before passing selection for 22 SAS. During his military career he served in a range of operational environments and was involved in counter-terrorism and specialist operations.
He became internationally known following the publication of Bravo Two Zero, which recounted the experiences of an SAS patrol operating behind Iraqi lines during the Gulf War. He subsequently developed a successful writing career spanning military memoirs, thrillers and fiction.
McNab has remained a prominent commentator on the British Armed Forces, Special Forces and the treatment of military veterans. He has frequently discussed issues including recruitment, operational decision-making, military law and the responsibilities of government towards serving personnel and veterans.
In September 2026, McNab said he would not join the SAS under the conditions facing the regiment today, arguing that concerns about investigations and possible prosecution years after military operations risk deterring recruits and undermining confidence among serving personnel. He has also stressed that his position does not amount to support for complete immunity from prosecution where credible allegations of wrongdoing exist.
