Emmanuel Macron is a French politician who has served as President of the French Republic since May 2017. He is the eighth president of France's Fifth Republic and was re-elected for a second term in April 2022.
Born in Amiens in December 1977, Macron studied philosophy before attending the École nationale d'administration (ENA), graduating in 2004. He subsequently joined France's Inspectorate General of Finance before moving into the banking sector.
Macron entered senior government service under President François Hollande, becoming Deputy General Secretary of the Presidency of the Republic in 2012. He later served as Minister for Economy, Industry and Digital Affairs from August 2014 until August 2016.
In 2016, Macron founded the political movement En Marche!, which developed into the political party later known as Renaissance. Running as a centrist candidate, he defeated Marine Le Pen in the second round of the 2017 presidential election and took office at the age of 39.
Macron won a second presidential term in 2022, again defeating Le Pen in the final round. As president, he has been a prominent advocate of deeper European cooperation and greater European strategic autonomy, while playing a major international role on issues including defence, the war in Ukraine, economic policy and France's relations with the United Kingdom and other European partners.
