The Liberal Democrats have taken the Almondbury ward seat on Kirklees Council from Reform UK after Paola Davies won Thursday's by-election with a majority of 671 votes.
Davies received 1,749 votes, representing 43.9% of those cast. Reform UK's Graham Haigh finished second with 1,078 votes, or 27.0%.

Reform vote falls back
The published comparison with the May 2026 council election puts the Liberal Democrat share up by 14.5 percentage points and Reform UK's share down by 10.0 points. The Conservatives increased their share by 4.4 points, while the Green and Labour shares fell by 8.0 and 3.4 points respectively.
The comparisons should be treated with some care because the May contest elected three councillors, whereas voters chose one councillor in this by-election.
Why was the by-election held?
The contest was triggered by the resignation of Reform UK councillor Craig Wiles, who had been elected in May when Reform won all three Almondbury seats.
Davies had also contested the ward in May, when she received 1,755 votes but was not elected. Her by-election victory returns her to Kirklees Council and gives the Liberal Democrats a gain at Reform's expense.
The result was declared following polling on Thursday 13 August 2026.
