It is being widely report that Prime Minister Andy Burnham has approved the continued use of British military bases for certain United States operations against Iran, in one of the first major national security decisions of his premiership.
Reports indicate that the permission applies to selected strikes that the British Government considers defensive, rather than giving Washington unrestricted approval to use UK-controlled facilities for a wider offensive campaign.
The decision broadly continues the approach taken by former prime minister Keir Starmer, whose government previously allowed British bases to support limited US action intended to prevent further Iranian missile attacks and protect British citizens, military personnel and regional allies.
However, the distinction between defensive and offensive military action is likely to remain controversial. Critics have questioned whether supporting American strikes could draw Britain more deeply into the conflict, while ministers maintain that every request to use a British base is considered individually and must comply with international law.
Burnham’s decision will therefore be closely scrutinised by Parliament, particularly if the United States expands its campaign or requests British support for operations extending beyond the Government’s stated defensive objectives.
