Manchester will host the G20 Leaders’ Summit in November 2027, the Government has formally confirmed, bringing heads of government from the world’s major economies to the city.
The summit will take place on 27 and 28 November 2027 at Manchester Central Convention Centre and will mark the culmination of the UK’s year-long presidency of the G20.
The Government said thousands of diplomats and delegates from international organisations are expected to attend alongside world leaders.
UK to take over G20 presidency
The UK will assume the G20 presidency from the United States following the US-hosted summit in Miami in December 2026.
During its presidency, Britain will host a programme of G20 meetings and events at locations across the UK, with the Manchester Leaders’ Summit forming the centrepiece of the year.
The Government said it intends to use the presidency to promote global economic stability and address major international challenges.
Manchester Central chosen for summit
The Leaders’ Summit will be staged at Manchester Central Convention Centre in the city centre.
The Government said Manchester was selected following months of work examining potential host cities, with preparations now set to accelerate ahead of the gathering.
Hundreds of local people are expected to be involved in the summit, including through security arrangements and showcases associated with the event.
Government promises events across UK
Although Manchester will host the Leaders’ Summit, other parts of the United Kingdom are also expected to stage G20 events during the presidency.
First Secretary of State Louise Haigh said hosting the summit would provide an opportunity to showcase British communities and industries to an international audience.
Greater Manchester Mayor Bev Craig said the city region was ready to welcome visitors from around the world and hoped the summit would help support growth and bring benefits to the region and the wider country.
Manchester City Council leader Garry Bridges described the selection of the city as a major honour and said the event could create opportunities for the hospitality sector while helping attract future investment, visitors and jobs.
First UK G20 summit since 2009
The 2027 gathering will be the first G20 Leaders’ Summit hosted by the UK since London staged the meeting in 2009 during the global financial crisis.
The G20 brings together 19 major economies alongside the European Union and African Union. According to the Government, its members collectively account for around 85% of global GDP, 75% of international trade and two-thirds of the world’s population.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham has also said artificial intelligence will be placed at the heart of the UK’s G20 presidency, with Britain seeking international agreement on principles and standards covering AI development and safety.
