Voters in Trinity will choose a new Wandsworth councillor on Thursday 27 August following the resignation of Labour councillor Lizzy Dobres.
Five candidates are standing in a contest that could determine whether the Conservatives secure outright control of Wandsworth Council or must continue governing through a minority arrangement.
When is the Trinity Ward by-election?
The Trinity Ward by-election will take place on Thursday 27 August 2026. Polling stations will be open from 7am until 10pm.
The election will fill one of the ward's two seats on Wandsworth Council.
Why is there a by-election in Trinity?
The by-election follows the resignation of Lizzy Dobres, who had represented Trinity for Labour since 2022 and was re-elected in May 2026.
Dobres said she had accepted a new job classed as politically restricted, meaning she could not continue serving as an elected councillor while holding the position.
She had also served as deputy leader of the Labour group. Her departure came shortly after Labour lost overall control of Wandsworth at the May elections.

What happened in Trinity in May 2026?
Trinity split its two seats between Labour and the Conservatives at the all-out Wandsworth election on 7 May.
Lizzy Dobres topped the poll for Labour with 1,842 votes. Conservative Kirsten Botting won the second seat with 1,647, finishing 64 votes ahead of Labour's Jack Mayorcas.

The official declaration recorded 8,792 candidate votes and turnout of 53.65%.
May's election filled two seats and voters could support as many as two candidates. The by-election fills one seat and each voter has one vote, so the earlier totals provide useful context but are not directly comparable with the forthcoming result.
Could the by-election decide control of Wandsworth Council?
Yes. The Conservatives won 29 of Wandsworth's 58 seats in May, with Labour taking 28 and independent councillor Malcolm Grimston holding the remaining seat. That left the Conservatives one seat short of an overall majority.
The Conservatives subsequently formed a minority administration supported by Grimston through a confidence and supply agreement covering essential votes such as the council budget and motions of no confidence.
Dobres's resignation reduced Labour to 27 councillors and left one vacancy. If Conservative candidate Otto Jacobsson wins Trinity, the party will hold 30 seats and gain an outright majority on the council.
A Labour victory would leave the Conservatives as the largest group on 29 seats, while restoring Labour to 28. A victory for the Greens, Liberal Democrats or Reform UK would also prevent the Conservatives reaching the 30-seat majority threshold.
What should we watch?
The contest is effectively a rematch for Conservative candidate Otto Jacobsson and Liberal Democrat Dylan Henderson, both of whom stood in Trinity in May.
Jacobsson finished fourth with 1,518 votes, just 65 behind Labour's Jack Mayorcas and 129 behind Conservative winner Kirsten Botting. Henderson received 250 votes.
Labour candidate Shirin Georgiani stood in Wandsworth Town in May, where she received 2,095 votes. Green candidate Sylvain Magne contested Wandle, receiving 541, while Reform candidate Josh Stanton stood in Northcote and received 235.
How will the winner be elected?
The by-election uses first past the post. Voters select one candidate, and the person receiving the most votes becomes the new councillor. The winner does not need to receive more than half of all votes cast.

People voting in person must take an accepted form of photographic identification. A polling card is helpful but is not required.
