David Lammy was quizzed by LBC's Nick Ferrari, who asked: "Is it transphobic to say only women have a cervix, David?"
David Lammy replied:
I don't know if it's transphobic, but it it's not, accurate, Nick. I mean, obviously, it's probably the case that only, that trans women don't have ovaries. But a cervix, I understand, is something that you can have, following various procedures and hormone treatment and all the rest of it.
David Lammy is the Shadow Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs.
There is a fantastic reply, and explanation for David Lammy by Bev Turner, mid-morning co-host of Britain's Newsroom on @GBNEWS:
Right... Shall we have a biology lesson?
A cervix is an incredibly strong, magical piece of the uniquely female body.
It is a ring of muscular fibres that sits at the bottom of the uterus (womb). It has a tiny hole which allows menstrual blood to leave the body.
It feels a little like the end of your nose.
But during pregnancy, it is so powerful that it stops a baby (or more than one!) plus 2 litres of fluid from falling out! It is the lock that silently keeps human life evolving.
During labour, this remarkable circle of fibres expands to as much as 10 cm in diameter so that a baby can exit smoothly. The texture changes and it feels more like your lips. Then - miracle of miracles - it goes back to it's previous size!!
So, @DavidLammy, (regardless of how much he believes he is a woman because he wears a dress) no man can grow a cervix.
Women are uniquely amazing. We all need to remember that.
You're welcome.
