Biography

Gavin Robinson is a Northern Irish unionist politician who serves as Leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) and as the Member of Parliament for Belfast East.

A lifelong resident of East Belfast, Robinson studied law at Queen's University Belfast and later completed a master's degree in Irish politics. He subsequently practised as a barrister before entering elected politics.

Robinson was elected to Belfast City Council in 2010 and served as Lord Mayor of Belfast from 2012 to 2013. He was first elected to the House of Commons for Belfast East in 2015 and has continued to represent the constituency at Westminster, retaining the seat at the 2024 general election.

He became deputy leader of the DUP in June 2023 and took over as interim leader in March 2024. Robinson was formally ratified as leader of the party in May 2024.

As DUP leader, Robinson is a prominent advocate of Northern Ireland remaining within the United Kingdom and represents the party at Westminster on major constitutional, economic and security issues affecting Northern Ireland.
