Volodymyr Zelenskyy is the President of Ukraine, having been elected in April 2019 and sworn in as the country's sixth president the following month. Born in Kryvyi Rih in 1978, he studied law at Kyiv National Economic University before pursuing a career in entertainment as an actor, writer and producer.
Before entering politics, Zelenskyy became one of Ukraine's best-known television personalities through the production company Kvartal 95. His political career was transformed following his landslide presidential election victory in 2019.
Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Zelenskyy has become an internationally prominent wartime leader, overseeing Ukraine's defence and campaigning for military, financial and diplomatic support from Western allies. He continues to serve as President and remains closely involved in Ukraine's military strategy and international diplomacy.
Russia has threatened that British military assets could be targeted in response to Ukrainian strikes using British-supported missiles, following Andy Burnham's agreement to help Kyiv produce long-range Storm Shadow weapons.
