British defence companies are to be given access to Ukrainian battlefield data to help develop artificial intelligence systems capable of controlling advanced drone swarms.
The Ministry of Defence said UK firms will be able to use combat-derived data gathered during Ukraine's war with Russia to train and test AI models for autonomous systems.
According to the Government, this is the first time British companies will receive access to the Ukrainian battlefield data through the initiative.
Real-world data to train British defence AI
The data has been generated by drones and other systems operating during the conflict in Ukraine, giving developers information derived from real battlefield conditions.
British companies will be able to use the material to develop and test artificial intelligence designed to coordinate groups of unmanned systems operating together.
The Government says access to operational data should allow new technologies to be developed and evaluated more rapidly than would be possible using simulated information alone.
Focus on AI-controlled drone swarms
A central objective is the development of AI capable of coordinating multiple drones as a swarm.
Such systems can potentially allow groups of unmanned aircraft to share information and coordinate their actions with reduced reliance on individual human control.
