The Home Office has opened applications for charities and non-profit organisations to become accredited sponsors under new refugee resettlement routes, allowing community groups and universities to help bring eligible refugees to the UK. The Government announced the move on 29 October 2026. Applications currently concern lead-sponsor accreditation, not individual refugees seeking immediate entry; first arrivals are expected in autumn 2027.

Three new sponsorship routes

The Named Community Sponsorship route will enable community groups to identify refugees they wish to support. The Refugee Study route will allow universities to sponsor eligible refugees for study. A Refugee Work route, involving employers, is due to open for applications in spring 2027. Accredited lead sponsors will assess sponsorship arrangements, support local groups and liaise with the Home Office.

Scheme initially limited to seven countries

The routes will initially operate from Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Kenya, Malaysia, Pakistan and Uganda. Eligible refugees must be outside their country of nationality and must have been present and registered with relevant authorities or UNHCR in one of those seven countries before 1 October 2026. The Home Office retains responsibility for identity and security checks and immigration decisions; sponsorship does not guarantee admission.

Arrivals initially expected to number in the hundreds

The Government says the routes will be capped and controlled according to sponsorship capacity. Arrivals across the new routes and the existing UK Resettlement Scheme are expected initially to number in the hundreds, potentially growing into the low thousands as illegal migration falls. These are Government projections, not confirmed admissions or guaranteed annual quotas.

Accreditation requirements

Prospective lead sponsors must demonstrate appropriate governance, safeguarding, resources and capacity. Eligible organisations include registered UK charities and qualifying community interest companies. Lead sponsors will recruit and support sponsor groups, assess proposed arrangements and oversee integration support. The new routes are separate from the existing Community Sponsorship Scheme.

Government position and next steps

Border Security and Asylum Minister Anna Turley said the routes would allow communities to help refugees fleeing war and persecution. The policy is part of wider asylum reforms combining controlled resettlement with border enforcement. Applications for lead sponsors under the community and study routes opened on 29 October 2026; the work route is expected to open in spring 2027, and first arrivals are anticipated in autumn 2027. Further operational guidance is due to follow.
